Small Neighborhood Problem!
A group of Vandals have been painting Graffiti every Friday and Saturday night at locations in Patchogue Village. They hit the West end of town, on the Montauk Highway, near Felices Restaurant; walking in an Easterly direction toward Four Corners.
They walked as far as the two alleys in the center of our village. They painted Graffiti in the Alleys, but did not destroy the existing Art Work!
I am very surprised that our Public Safety Officers have not been stationed in our village, waiting for the usual weekend visit of the Pseudo Art Community!
If you are returning home on any night, please drive through our village, and look for youths; possibly with Back Packs. I personally go out of my way to drive through our village whenever I am out at night! If possible also drive on Terry Street, and Oak Street!
This Village is "our turf," and we are not about to hand it over to vandals, without a fight!
Call Public Safety at 475 Christmas:
that is 475 1225
Please let our Neighborhood Watch know what has happened in our area. Please reply to this email; even if you have nothing to report, but tranquility!
Thank You
MANW

Put your car keys next to your bed!
This great idea was emailed over and it was too good not to share:
Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents, your Doctor’s Office, the checkout girl at the market, everyone you run across. Please feel free to pass this blog post to them. However you can do it, please do. Keep them informed with this very simple tip.
Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get into your house, just press the panic button for your car, providing your car does have an alarm system and you do have the alarm remote.
The alarm will be set off and the horn will continue to sound either until you turn it off or the car battery dies.
This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: it’s a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote unit. It works if you park in your driveway or garage.
If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are that the burglar/rapist won’t stick around….after a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there, and sure enough the criminal won’t want that!
And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there.
This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or prevent a sexual assault.
My Mom has suggested to my Dad that he carry his car keys with him in case he falls outside and she doesn’t hear him. He can activate the car alarm and then she’ll know there’s a problem.
P.S…it would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can’t reach a phone.
One additional note: Did you know there is a NEW number to call in Suffolk for all non-life threatening, non-emergency situations? Call 852-COPS for issues like loud parties, dogs barking, etc...and let's save 911 for life and death situations!

Spring is right around the corner...
...and one of the things you can do to make your home a nicer place is to start your Spring cleanup! You see...Neighborhood Watch isn't just about crime and statistics, but about making our town a better place to live. When you walk around your neighborhood and see the flowers starting to bloom, everything looking fresh and tidy--it instills a sense of pride. A sense that this town is still, despite the economic crisis, on the upswing. With a vibrant arts scene and a burgeoning restaurant row, Patchogue is THE place to be.
So, you've taken the first step and decided to tackle the garage (den, attic, what have you...), the next decision should be how to get rid of the items that you don't want or need, while still doing something good for the environment and the local area. Freecycle is an online swap meet that keeps items in good condition out of landfills and puts them into the hands of people that need them.
Maybe you have the urge to get dirty and work in the garden. The Patchogue Garden Club has monthly meetings and events where you can do everything from getting gardening tips to buying plants. If you'd really like to get in depth, Cornell Cooperative Extension will be providing day long gardening seminars that will include a box lunch and raffles.
It takes all of us pulling together to make this a town we are proud to call home! Call your neighbors, call your friends. Make it a group effort, and have some fun. Grab some growlers from the Brick House or Blue Point to kick back with when you are done, and make a hometown day of it!

Let us know what your concerns are!
One of the things a Neighborhood Watch is all about is to create a sense of community...we all have issues and things we have seen that concern us--from the senseless death of an Ecuadorian immigrant, to seeing the car next to ours jacked up on bricks with the tires stolen, to the more pedestrian happenings such as the unlawful dumping of litter. What we would like to know is what concerns YOU--hate crimes? noisy parties? the sounds of possible domestic abuse in the apartment next to yours? No one's concerns are any less valid than anyone else's.
We welcome you to post your comments on this blog...after all, this is meant to be a community forum. Just please...no bashing of other people or groups...this is meant to be a place where people share information and present ideas to improve our quality of life here in Patchogue. After all, many of us live here because we love this town...its funky, artsy vibe; the restaurants; the diversity; the microbreweries; the fact that for a night out, most of us could walk to where we'd like to go!
As for this blog, information is the single most important thing that will help us deter bad things from happening. On that note, here's an update of some of the latest crime reports in our community (1/17 to 1/23):
Two incidents of harassment
Two reports of theft
One report of domestic dispute
One report of vandalism
Two reports of burglary
Do you have anything to report? Let us know at westpatnw@gmail.com, we look forward to hearing from you!
